Blueprints for utopias often become, in reality, totalitarian states where no dissension is tolerated. I’ve been working on some different ideas of utopia and this is me looking at one of the utopian models; the city described in Revelation 21; “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” Sounds great, until you read on that this is a place with no night. Ok, I get that it’s a metaphor and night is the place of chaos and crime, but it’s also the place of sleep, of sex, of late night conversations putting the world to rights, of rest. What kind of utopia needs no night? Yet this is still a vision of life and hope and the copper lines represent for me, the subversive and beautiful hope escaping from the rigid structures of control and order.
